Ten Signposts To SuccessHow To Keep Your Thinking Right On The Road To Success – Lessons I Need To Keep Reminding Myself
“Success is a journey, not a destination”
In one of my first ever seminars I heard American motivational speaker Zig Ziglar say these now famous words. “If your thinkin’s stinkin’, your business will be sinkin’....” ‘So that’s why my business is sinking,’ I thought at the time. In my second seminar I heard James Rohn say something just as profound, “If you want to be successful....study success..” Since then I have taken heed of both pieces of advice.
SIGNPOSTS FOR YOUR THINKINGLife is a journey. Our decisions guide us every minute of the day. These are ten of the key signposts I wanted to share with you to help you on your path. I hope they help you stay on track. Have them in your diary or on your fridge or next to your bed or in your car. Continually wash your brain with these statements for 21 days and start to notice the change in your life....
TEN KEY SIGNPOSTS TO SUCCESS
1. I work harder on myself than on anyone elseAnthony Robbins writes “For things to change, I must change first..” If you make a commitment to work harder on yourself, be it with exercise, diet, brain food, business skills, sales skills or people skills; you will change your life.
2. I never take advice from anyone more messed up than I amSo often in the past I’ve taken advice and acted on it from almost anyone. Tom Hopkins said this one...in fact its on his shower affirmation card. So I say this to myself every morning in the shower just in case I’m tempted to revert.
3. There are no mistakes - only resultsHave you ever had anything go wrong in your life ? Or was it just a result that was there for you to learn from and grow ? Any event in our lives can be seen as a tragedy, disaster, mistake or stuff up ... or it can be seen as an opportunity to learn and develop. It all depends on how you look at it..
4. If I use the right system, I’ll get the right resultSystems are the procedures and behaviours we use to obtain results. If we consistently use the right system, we’ll consistently get the right result. That’s why Macdonald’s consistently perform way above the competition. They have better systems. Whenever you get a result in your life you don’t want, look to the system for what you need to change. Any stuff up is an opportunity to improve your system.. Improve the SYSTEM, Improve your RESULTS.
5. Everything happens for a purpose - and it serves meThe key questions to ask when something has gone really well or if something has gone terribly wrong (like me losing an important proposal on my computer) are:
6. My business is a customer satisfying, money making machineIf you view your business as a production line. Say like a motor vehicle production line... then you have people, expectations, money, time and materials going into the machine and people, money, materials and feelings coming out of it. The question is,
7. The more customers I talk to and help, the more money I make. There is a strange relationship in business. The more times I get belly to belly with a prospective customer, the more money I make. Not only do you have an opportunity to find out the needs of people when you talk to them, you also have an opportunity to discover new products or services you can provide. You have an opportunity to get inside their minds to discover how else you can be of value. And the more value you are, the more you can charge. It’s exciting isn’t it..?
8. Business is a team gameThe days of the one-man band are numbered. Why ? Because as a one-man band you are limited by 24 hours in the day. As one person you can only service so many customers then that’s it. Sure you can work 18 hours a day, never see your family and die of 2 heart attacks and 345 headaches. The better way to go is to put a team together. It might only be one or two other people. But when you create a team you bring the power of leverage into effect. You can now service more people with less effort. You also generate better ideas, because “2 heads are better than one...”
9. Money is a physical manifestation of how well I play the gameMoney is just the score on the scoreboard, it is not the game itself. Just as the numbers on the scoreboard at a football match are a reflection of how the team is playing, so it is with money in business. Wealthy people will tell you, “its easy to make money when you know how..” The key is to invest time and energy and learn how. If you’re not happy with your scoreboard, learn how to kick more goals...
10. Work is playWork has to be fun. If you’re not having fun you can’t give it your best shot. Laughter, enjoyment, celebration and sharing a job well done is half the fun of it. Make sure you put the spirit back into your work place by giving your team a sense of purpose. Create a goal, a mission, a vision. Then have fun making it happen. If you’re not having fun making it happen, it may not happen. It’s a game. It’s a journey. And its meant to be fun.....
Have fun on your journey to greatness...
